about
Xanthoria Quartet was founded in 2019 by kindred musical spirits Kate Goddard (violin), Abby Swidler (violin/composition), Hannah Selin (viola/composition) and Alexandra Jones (cello). The four met as freelancers in New York, playing music ranging wildly in style from contemporary classical music, to baroque music, to music by indie bands and singer-songwriters. As a quartet, they share a commitment to bringing music of many genres to life with vivacity and color.
In their first year together, Xanthoria Quartet worked with the Brooklyn Composers Collective to record an album of new compositions; premiered new compositions by members of the Brooklyn Composers Alliance; played with singer-songwriter Leah Shaw in the premiere of her forthcoming album, Play Beautifully; and recorded an original film score by composer Jessica DiMari. The group also performed a program of “story-within-a-story” quartets by Janáček, Glass and Josquin at Brooklyn College in May 2019. In February 2020, the quartet premiered new compositions by its own Swidler and Selin alongside reimagined Renaissance vocal works by Josquin, Monteverdi and De Rore. Xanthoria’s first album, featuring Selin and Swidler’s new works, will be released in fall 2020.
